Background
Animal Friends was incorporated in March 2003. The organization is 501(c)3 tax exempt. The purpose was to assist the Brenham Humane Service by providing financial and volunteer aid. At that time, over 95% of the homeless animals in Washington County that were fortunate to find some care found their way to this Shelter.
Animal Friends fenced an area to allow the animals easy access to a play area, provided toys, furniture, staff training manuals, computer programs, 36 kennels, a kitty condo, office and shelter supplies, a 16 foot 3 door trailer and tents. The trailer and tents greatly facilitated the ability to do mobile adoptions.
Animal Friends provided volunteers to work with staff members in providing care to the animals and also assisted in all mobile adoptions. A small amount of money was provided for spay/neuter and emergency shelter animal medical care.
Animal Friends merged in 2006 with Animals TLC and proceeded to provide programs on various aspects of animal care and behavior to groups. Books were purchased for the Nancy Carol Roberts Library and KIND NEWS was provided to all children in Washington County.
Our mission expanded when it became evident that without stopping the birth rate, the problem of their not being unwanted, abandoned and abused animals would never occur. We realized that there was no low-cost clinic located between Houston and Austin and between Waco and Corpus Christi. Our initial plan for a clinic to serve Washington County expanded to a regional plan that covers 15 counties.
